Oboe & English horn
Dane Philipsen is currently a doctoral student at Northwestern University's Bienen School of Music. As a student of Scott Hostetler, he is pursuing a DMA in Oboe Performance with a cognate emphasis in musicology. His duties at Northwestern have included organizing a series of community engagement performances around the Chicago area for the chamber music program and teaching Introduction to Music, teaching a course in music appreciation, and teaching supplemental lessons and reedmaking classes for the oboe studios.
Previously, Philipsen was based in Atlanta where he was principal oboist for the Atlanta Opera and the Georgia Symphony Orchestra. He taught oboe and coached chamber music at Emory University, and at Kennesaw State University he taught oboe and a music appreciation course, Arts in Society: Music. He was also a founding member of the Morningside Chamber Musicians who actively performed standard repertoire and newly commissioned works for reed trio.
In the past, Philipsen played oboe and English horn for the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Symphony Orchestra for three seasons. Additionally, he has been heard with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, the Kansas City Symphony, the Phoenix Symphony, the Charleston Symphony Orchestra, and the New World Symphony.
Philipsen graduated with honors with a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Northern Iowa. While there, he studied with Tom Barry. He continued his studies with Martin Schuring at Arizona State University where he earned a Master of Music degree.
